Technical inheritance
Syntax, type systems, control structures, libraries, runtime models and implementation strategies can travel independently. A diagram should say which dimension of a language is being compared.
Differentiate influence from descent
C++ combines a C language foundation with organization ideas its designer identified in Simula. Those are two different connections, so a single parent-child tree hides information instead of clarifying it.
Keep alternative accounts visible
When sources disagree on a particular influence, we will publish the competing attributions and dates. Unverified relationships will not be silently promoted to “documented” to make a prettier visualization.
