THE QUESTION

A visual argument is only useful when a reader can see the documents behind its lines.

RESEARCH NOTES / OPENING EDITIONNOT AN EXHAUSTIVE SURVEY
01.01 / RESEARCH FRAME

Start with the evidence, not the picture

The opening graph traces a deliberately limited lineage through ALGOL 60, Simula and C++. Selecting a relationship reveals its meaning, sources and qualification; the absence of an edge does not mean two technologies are unrelated. The illustrated five-node sample is not a complete history of programming languages.

01.02 / RESEARCH FRAME

A line must have a type

The same graphic can misleadingly collapse different relationships. Language inheritance, intellectual influence, a successor project, shared contributors and implementation reuse are different claims. We require a distinct relation label and supporting evidence for each.

01.03 / RESEARCH FRAME

Make the data inspectable

Each node has a stable identifier; each edge has a claim ID and bibliographic source IDs. An openly readable JSON file makes the diagram portable into future exhibits and the planned WordPress research workflow.
