TIMELINE LAYERS / RESEARCH DOSSIER

Timeline Layers.

Many histories happened at once.

THE QUESTION

Different timelines can tell different true stories about a single invention.

RESEARCH NOTES / OPENING EDITIONNOT AN EXHAUSTIVE SURVEY
05.01 / RESEARCH FRAME

Separate the date types

A concept proposed, a prototype running, a language specified, a product sold and a standard adopted are distinct milestones. Unqualified “invented in” dates often conceal that distinction.

05.02 / RESEARCH FRAME

Parallel developments

The lab will support layered views for language design, implementation, publication and adoption. The opening edition includes a curated set rather than implying full global historical coverage.

05.03 / RESEARCH FRAME

Account for uncertainty

If a source gives only a year or decade, the interface should not imply day-level precision. Dates are accompanied by what exactly is being dated.

CONTRIBUTE A DOCUMENTED FINDING

Supply a source-backed milestone and state whether it records a proposal, implementation, release or adoption.
