IDEAS & INFLUENCES / RESEARCH DOSSIER
Ideas & Influences.
Distinguish inspiration from implementation.
A historical influence claim requires more than similarities noticed after the fact.
Describe the mechanism
Did designers read a paper, work on an earlier system, borrow an API, reproduce an algorithm or solve a similar problem independently? Each mechanism needs different evidence.
First-person evidence has a place
Stroustrup’s account of Simula and C is strong evidence for his stated design intentions, while still being a later recollection. We distinguish the perspective of a participant from an independently corroborated chronology.
Negative evidence is limited
Failure to find a memo is not proof that an influence did not exist. We identify search limits, incomplete archives and alternative explanations before drawing a conclusion.
CONTRIBUTE A DOCUMENTED FINDING
Document an influence claim with a specific mechanism, an identifiable source and a competing explanation.
